Frenship Memorial Names Head Volleyball Coach

Born and raised in West Texas, Whitney Gibson grew up playing volleyball and other sports in Levelland, graduating from Levelland High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Texas Tech University before returning to Levelland.

“I actually had no intention of being a teacher or a coach growing up, but the moment I started, I knew it was where I belonged,” said Coach Gibson.

She began her career as a 5th-grade math teacher at Levelland Intermediate, where she taught for three years before stepping into the role of head volleyball coach at Levelland High School.

“I became the head volleyball coach and a math teacher during the 2021-2022 school year and have remained there until now,” said Coach Gibson.

When asked what led her to Frenship Memorial, Coach Gibson explained that it was truly a matter of faith and timing

“There is no other way to put it other than just the Lord's plan prevailing. I had heard talk about Frenship Memorial opening up a while back, but didn't really think I was ready for change and was content in my hometown,” said Coach Gibson. “I went in nervous... but continued to pray that if this was where God wanted me, I would trust Him. Here I am now! I met with several Frenship Memorial staff members, and it just felt like home. I knew this was where I was being led."

With seven years of experience in education, including three years as a 5th-grade math teacher and four years as head volleyball coach and geometry teacher, Coach Gibson brings both passion and leadership to the new program.

She is particularly excited about the unique opportunity to build a new volleyball program.

“When you come into a school, it's your job to uphold traditions and expectations that were laid out before you, but here I get to make everything my own. These students and athletes don't have to be compared to anyone or anything else before them. We get to create everything together, and that's such an exciting idea to me!”

Coach Gibson also looks forward to connecting with her athletes and the positive energy surrounding the new school.

“I've already met several of my future athletes, and it's exciting to see their drive and that they want this year to be great as well. Everyone is so positive and excited about the school opening, so you just can't help but be happy thinking about it all.”

Outside of teaching and coaching, Coach Gibson has been married to her husband, Josh, for almost six years, and they have two children: Harper, 4, and Weldon, 2.

“My husband and I actually met while working at Intermediate together, and the rest is history! The senior class that just graduated from Levelland loves to take all of the credit for us ending up together,” said Coach Gibson.

Josh will also be teaching and coaching at Frenship Memorial this year, bringing the family full circle. Outside of school, Gibson has been a fitness instructor at Pure Barre in Lubbock for six years, so you might catch her there when she’s not on the volleyball court or in the classroom.

Frenship ISD is proud to welcome Whitney Gibson to the Panther family and looks forward to the exciting new chapter she will help build at Frenship Memorial High School.
